Dimensions of Coaching

Our coaching programs are designed to move the client through the following key activities:

Establish the coaching foundation

The first coaching session focuses on clarifying the logistics of the coaching relationship, the underpinning values and the clients "learning agenda". This first session is also essential in starting to build an effective client-coach relationship and developing trust and confidence in the process.

Explore to develop understanding

The next few coaching sessions typically focus on exploration of the client's context, challenges, responsibilities and style. Often diagnostic or psychometric tools are used at this stage to bring clarity to the client and to provide alternative frameworks to understand complex issues. For example, the MBTI can be useful in building client understanding of their preferred style and the impact of this on those they seek to influence.

Taking action to promote integration

At this stage of the coaching program, attention turns to drawing on what has been learnt and actually looking for ways to apply learning back on the job. The client is encouraged to identify important and challenging issues and circumstances and to identify and apply alternative approaches. It is through such application that the client starts to build their capabilities and to address the needs of their "learning agenda".

Monitor, evaluate and adjust

At all stages of any coaching program, it is essential that evaluation discussions be held between the client and coach. This ensures that the coaching program remains relevant and responsive to changing client circumstances, particularly if the coaching extends over many months. Often a clients "learning agenda" at the start of the coaching program will change as they become more skilled and knowledgeable and the coaching program needs to reflect this.
